Shaping the Future of Tech Education

There’s a national need for industrial technology teachers, and here at UNI, we lead the state – graduating more industrial technology teachers than any other institution. Our program is the largest of its kind in Iowa, preparing graduates to teach industrial arts at the high school level.

Coursework includes training in: computer-aided design, automotive, woods, metals and other in-demand areas. You’ll also learn effective curriculum planning, teaching methods, and classroom and lab management – preparing you to be the best teacher possible.

Our students flourish with small class sizes, supportive professors and abundant classroom teaching experiences, making sure they’re ready to lead the future generation of learners.

Program Curriculum

The Technology & Engineering Education program has developed its curriculum utilizing recommendations from a very active advisory board made up of industry professionals. UNI's curriculum is developed by industry - for industry.

Career Outlook

About 14,800 openings for graduates of the Technology & Engineering Education program at the University of Northern Iowa are projected each year, on average, over the next decade.

Opportunities for Students

Teach Iowa Scholar Program

Because of the strong need for Industrial Technology teachers in Iowa, many of our students qualify for the Teach Iowa Scholar Program. This program provides up to $20,000 over a five year period for those teaching in a high-demand field.

Some of the most impactful learning experiences happen beyond the textbook. In the Department of Applied Engineering & Technical Management, you'll learn by doing. Put your skills to use on real projects – whether it’s building tiny houses, or helping plan construction projects here on campus.

The UNI chapter of the Technology & Engineering Education Collegiate Association (TEECA) promotes professionalism, leadership, scholarship, service and fellowship among students in technology education.
