Smart Art: Upcycling Waste Materials and Impacting Community

Mon, 06/10/2013 - 12:00pm - Fri, 06/14/2013 - 4:00pm
Rooms 207 & 209, Kamerick Art Building
"Smart Art" students will gain appreciation for their outdoor environment by spending time outside and creating works of art from natural debris. The advantages and disadvantages of recycling waste materials and the impact human excess has on the environment will be addressed by looking at contemporary artists who are using their own work as calls to action. Students will also have the opportunity to create a large, collaborative work using materials that would otherwise be discarded but have instead been collected through the Iowa Waste Exchange (a website that helps to distribute miscellaneous factory remnants). By using their creativity and innovation all students will have the opportunity to "upcycle" garbage and everyday objects into something that has both visual impact and a positive impact on their community. noon- 4 p.m. daily Ages: entering 10-12th grades Cost: $50
