A University of Northern Iowa professor’s book earned a spot on a library magazine’s list of top academic titles for 2019.

Christopher R. Martin’s “No Longer Newsworthy: How the Mainstream Media Abandoned the Working Class” made the prestigious list of the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice.

Martin is a Professor of Communication Studies at UNI. His book charts the decline of labor reporting from the late 1960s onwards and reveals why and how the media lost sight of the American working class and the effects of it doing so.

Every year, Choice magazine publishes a list of Outstanding Academic Titles reviewed the previous calendar year.

The selective list contains approximately 10% of some 6,000 works reviewed in Choice each year. Choice editors base their selections on the reviewer's evaluation of the work, the editor's knowledge of the field and the reviewer's record.

In awarding Outstanding Academic Titles, the editors apply several criteria to reviewed titles:

overall excellence in presentation and scholarship
importance relative to other literature in the field
distinction as a first treatment of a given subject in book or electronic form
originality or uniqueness of treatment [photo of the book cover]
value to undergraduate students
importance in building undergraduate library collections

Choice is a publishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries. It includes the magazine Choice as well as other products including the Choice Reviews database. The magazine was established in 1964.
