Melissa’s research explores how group processes shape performance. Her work has explored how organization members navigate friendship and task networks in leadership teams, unpacked how teams use and are impacted by technology, investigated how communication networks and information accuracy shape group interaction, and examined communication competencies for effective collaboration in distributed teams. Drawing on structuration, sensemaking, and functional theories, she tackles group and organizational problems systematically and her work has been published in journals such as Small Group Research, Communication Research Reports, and Human Communication Research.

Highlighting the connection between theory and practice, Melissa teaches courses in organizational communication, conflict management, quantitative research methods, business and professional oral communication, and group communication. She was recognized with the UNI Bookstore Outstanding Teaching Award in 2018, has completed the teachUNI Faculty Teaching Certificate, and serves on the advisory board for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
