Teaching Interests

I teach courses on Religion and Race, Religion and Public Schools, Religion and Law, as well as Religion and Popular Culture.

I also direct the Institute for Religion and Education which assists UNI students, as well as Iowa educators, with professional development opportunities involving religion and public education.  

Research Interests

My research investigates U.S. government efforts to shape and secure American ideas about religion, especially when those ideas are found in the classroom or the courtroom. My first book, Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors: Religion and the History of the CIA (University of Chicago Press) was published in 2021.
