Associate Professor, Graphic Design
Soo Hostetler is an associate professor in Graphic Design. She worked for several years at a prominent publishing company before she joined the faculty at UNI. Professor Hostetler’s scholarly work has emphasized motion Graphics and kinetic typography.
Her designs have been presented at numerous exhibitions such as the International Digital Media and Arts Exhibition, Flash Animation and Motion Graphics Festival, Arizona Digital Media Investigations Exhibition, Korean Society of Basic Design & Art International Exhibition, International Exchange Korea Design Center Exhibition, Manifest Sound and Moving Image Show, 30 and Beyond: College of Design Alumni Exhibition at Iowa State University, Emotion: Design for the Humanities at St. Cloud State University, Korea Society of Design Science and Hearst Center for the Arts, etc. In recent years, she has explored her proud Korean heritage folk art called “Minhwa” to represent imaginative expression. In addition, she has been exploring abstracted typographic series where she utilizes letterform to communicate experiences and emotions that have arisen in her life.

She was appointed an associate editor for the International Journal of Design Principles & Practices. One of Hostetler’s motion graphics works was selected as one of the best of the year at the Flash Animation and Motion Graphics Festival and her designs were chosen for the American Design Awards and were featured in Graphic Design USA magazine. Her research, about various aspects of digital media, has been presented in several papers, in national and international conferences and in journals at the National UCDA(University and College Designers Association) Design Education Conference, FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory & Education) Conference, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Education Conference, Design Principles & Practices International Conference, IDMA International Conference (International Digital Media and Arts), Korean Society of Basic Design & Art, UNLV International Conference, International Conference on Camouflage: Art, Science and Popular Culture, and Hawaii International Conference, etc.
