Associate Professor, Art Education

Dr. Wendy S. Miller is an Associate Professor, and coordinates the undergraduate Art Education program at the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa’s largest art education program. She teaches undergraduate and graduate art education courses. Wendy was an elementary art teacher for over a decade before coming to UNI. Her research focuses on arts-based service learning, community art, and  Pk-16 collaborations in art making. Wendy has created banners and zines with children in response to the Declaration of Human Rights, installed Little Free Libraries through urban communities to advocate for literacy, and created an interactive art exhibit to educate the community on teen homelessness and building inclusivity within schools.

Teaching Interests

Wendy enjoys teaching and creating art within diverse communities, especially with preservice teachers and children. Mentoring students as they become teachers provides exciting opportunities that she looks forward to each semester.

Research Interests

Her research focuses on sharing the impact of the work she does with arts-based service learning in the community. She focuses on ways to engage students in understanding and making positive changes in their community through art making.

Professional Accomplishments

National Board Certification, 20 under 40 recipient for outstanding young leaders in the Cedar Valley who are making a difference in their work and personal lives to make the area a better place, and Iowa’s Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator.

Additional Information

Editor of The Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education Journal. This journal focuses on fostering the mentorship between doctoral students and professors and to provide a safe place for new authors to share their doctoral research.
