Paul M. Shand

Dr. Shand received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Purdue University, where he investigated the magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors at very low temperatures. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
Dr. Shand has taught physics courses at all levels. Most recently, he has taught Modern Physics, Modern Physics Laboratory, and General Physics I. Dr. Shand also developed and taught Physics III: Theory and Simulation and Physics of Modern Materials.
Dr. Shand does experimental research in the area of magnetic materials. He has studied the fundamental magnetic properties of such materials as rare-earth-based nanostructured materials, diluted magnetic semiconductors, manganites exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance, multilayered systems exhibiting giant magnetoresistance (GMR), and titanomagnetites. Currently, Dr. Shand is involved in studying the fundamental magnetic and electronic properties of transition-metal dichalcogenide materials and heterostructures, as well as the magnetic and electronic characteristics of Heusler alloys. Much of this work involves collaborating with other faculty members in the Physics Department.
