Department of Physics
We Engineer Understanding
Physics may be one of the earliest and most foundational sciences, but its study is revolutionizing our world. Every day, physicists are making breakthrough discoveries in the fields of science and technology – building a brighter future.
UNI has one of the finest physics programs in the Midwest, with a curriculum that focuses on hands-on experience – putting theory into practice. Here, you’ll have the chance to work with state-of-the-art equipment, and conduct impactful research with our expert professors – all starting on day one.
With skills in data analysis, problem solving and programming, our graduates go on to careers with the U.S. government, nationally-renowned research labs, big-name tech companies, even the James Webb Space Telescope.
Ready to find out where physics will take you?
The Physics program at UNI ranks in the top 15% nationally for students graduating from a bachelor's only department.
In scholarships and fellowships available for students in our department.

Opportunities
Research
Through unique undergraduate research experiences, our students have the chance to take their learning beyond the classroom – solving real-world problems. Working side-by-side with professors, you’ll develop practical skills that set you apart from the crowd, and have the chance to publish your work for the world to see.
Scholarships
Thanks to the support of our alumni, donors and friends, our department is able to offer generous scholarships to our students. With $1 million in funding for scholarships and fellowships, any student who needs assistance will receive it here.
Physics Club
The Physics Club provides a friendly network of peers to connect with through fun social events, and unique educational opportunities. In the past, students have traveled to national conferences together, and on field trips to places such as the Fermi National Accelerator Lab, Argonne National Lab and more.
