Thanks to our generous donors and friends, we’re able to offer a wide array of scholarship opportunities for incoming and current students in our department. These scholarships and information about the application process are listed below.

To apply for the incoming freshman and undergraduate scholarships, complete the online scholarship application before the deadlines listed.

Scholarships for Incoming Freshman

Math Day Scholarships

The top five students in the annual Math Day competition are guaranteed at least $1,500 each in scholarship funding for their first year at UNI.

Glenn Boysen Endowed Scholarship

Last year one $517 scholarship was awarded* to an incoming freshman math major.

Irvin & Dorothy Brune Math Education Endowed Scholarship

Last year one $978 scholarship was awarded* to an incoming freshman math education major.

Patricia J. Larson Mathematics Scholarship

This is a new scholarship for Math majors. Both incoming freshmen and current undergraduate students are eligible. It is anticipated that two $7,500 scholarships will be awarded for the 22/23 academic year. The scholarship is renewable.

Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship

Last year the Math Department awarded three $5,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen math education majors.

Fred W. Lott Scholarship in Mathematics

Last year one $3,174 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an incoming freshman math major.

Nathan McCay Mathematics Scholarship

This past year, two $4,750 scholarships were awarded.* Incoming freshmen majoring in mathematics are eligible for this award.

Charles and Dorothy McLeod Tubbs Mathematics Education Scholarship

Last year one $1,453.00 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be majoring in Mathematics-Teaching.

Augusta Schurrer Scholarship - Math Excellence

Last year two scholarship were awarded totaling $12,666.* The applicant must be an incoming freshman majoring in Mathematics.

Scholarships for Current Undergraduate Students

Robert E. Allender Mathematics Teaching Scholarship

Last year one $875 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Mathematics-Teaching. The student must be enrolled full-time with a GPA of at least 2.5.

The American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section) Scholarship

Last year one $1,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be following a course of study appropriate for a career in quality control. Preference is given to members and descendants of members of the American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section).

Athene Actuarial Scholarship

Last year, two $5,000 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be an Actuarial Science major and have completed at least one academic year at UNI with a GPS of at least 3.5.

Conrad and Jeannette Baumler Mathematics Education Scholarship

Last year one $1,100 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics-Teaching with a GPA of 3.0 or above.

Carol Woolson Beck Endowed Scholarship

Last year one $1,950 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching.

Robert W. Bettle and Virginia McShane Bettle Mathematics Education Scholarship

Last year one $600 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching.

Alice & George Brown Math Scholarship

Last year one $1,350 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be enrolled in any program of the department. The student must be enrolled full-time with a GPA of at least 2.5. Students already receiving a continued scholarship (such as Presidential, CNS Awards, etc.) are not eligible.

Robert A. and Carol L. Hendrickson Crane Scholarship

Last year one $5,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a student majoring in secondary mathematics education. The applicant must be a junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

John F. and Ruth Cross Scholarship

Last year one $1,475 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a Statistics and Actuarial Science major who will have completed or be participating in an internship at the time of receipt. Preference shall be given to students with internships outside of Iowa.

Elementary Mathematics Education Endowed Scholarship

Last year one $3,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be enrolled in Elementary Mathematics Education and must have completed 12 hours in the elementary education math education minor and have completed 65 hours at UNI.

E.W. Hamilton Scholarship

Last year one $2,650 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be enrolled in any program of the department or be an elementary education major with a K-6 math minor. The student must have completed 45 semester hours of college and have completed a minimum of one semester in residence at UNI prior to making application.

Alan and Barbara Hubbard Math, Chemistry, and Physics Education Scholarship

This scholarship provides support for sophomore, junior or senior students majoring in math education, physics education or chemistry education with a minimum GPA of 3.2, and students in the Masters of Math Education program. Preference will be given to a student from the Tracy Area High School in Tracy, Minnesota. The scholarship may be renewed provided the student maintains the criteria mentioned.

Rich and Dee James Secondary Mathematics Teaching Scholarship

Last year two $1,400 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics-Teaching. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.25. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Iowa.

Robert R. Johnson Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics

This year one $1,325 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be at least a junior majoring in mathematics teaching with a concentration in statistics.

Patricia Lange Memorial Scholarship

Last year two $2,450 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a Mathematics major of at least junior standing. Preference is given to female students.

Patricia J. Larson Mathematics Scholarship

Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship

Last year, eight scholarships were awarded ranging from $2,175 to $7,000.* The applicant must be majoring in secondary math education, with preference given to junior, senior undergraduate or graduate students.

Nathan McCay Mathematics Scholarship

Last year two $4,750 scholarships were awarded.* This available to all undergraduates.

George and Mary McCoige Math Education Scholarship

Up to $2,000 will be awarded.* The applicant must be majoring in Math Teaching, at least sophomore standing, GPA of at least 3.0, with preference to females.

Gladys Mittman Math Scholarship

Last year, one $1,150 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior majoring in math.

Jim and Sharon Scherbring Math Education Teaching Scholarship

This is a new scholarship for Math Education Teaching majors. Last year one $1,900 scholarship was awarded.*

Augusta Schurrer Mathematics Grant

Last year two $2,400 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching. The student must have completed at least 65 semester hours at UNI with a GPA of a least 3.0. At least 20 of these hours must be in mathematics. Students already receiving a continued scholarship (such as Presidential, Provost, science symposium, etc.) are not eligible.

Myrtle Wiese Smith Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Last year, one $1,200 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching.

Sorenson Elementary Mathematics Scholarship

Last year one $3,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a K-6 mathematics minor who shows outstanding promise as a prospective teacher. The applicant must have completed at least 75 credit hours at UNI with a GPA of at least 3.0. The student must also have at least 17 hours of completed work on the elementary mathematics minor with a GPA of at least 3.0. Selection will be made on the basis of scholarship and the potential for success as an elementary or middle school teacher; a short essay on your goals and aspirations for teaching mathematics is part of the application process. Students who graduate in Spring 2016 (or later) are eligible. This scholarship will be awarded Spring 2016 and funds will be credited to the recipients U-bill at that time.

Thiessen Elementary Mathematics Education Scholarship

Last year one $3,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a minor in K-8 mathematics education.

Marcia E. Traer Endowment Scholarship

Last year two $2,050 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics the following academic year. The recipient must be employed part-time and preference will be given to female applicants.

Carl and Wanda Wehner Mathematics Teaching Scholarship

Last year two $3,400 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching who shows outstanding promise as a prospective teacher. Overall GPA and mathematics GPA must be at least 3.0. At least one semester of residency at UNI must have been completed at the time of application. Preference is given to students who intend to teach in Iowa for two years following graduation. The applicant must show financial need.

Scholarships for Graduate Students

Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics

We anticipate awarding several scholarships of up to $1,000 each to students who demonstrate financial need, have a graduate GPA of 3.25 or above, and are beginning or current members of a cohort in UNI’s Graduate Programs in Mathematics Education.

FINE Foundation Middle Grade Mathematics Teacher's Graduate Student Scholarship

A scholarship of up to $1,000 will be awarded for a beginning or current member of a cohort in UNI's Graduate Program in Mathematics for the Middle Grades. the recipient must be employed as a mathematics teacher in the state of Iowa, have two years of teaching experience and have good academic standing.

Michael Millar Scholarship

A scholarship award of up to $1000 to students who demonstrate merit and financial need with preference given to students enrolled in the Master of Arts Program in Mathematics. The recipient must be taking at least six credit hours of graduate-level mathematics in any twelve-month period.

John C. Peterson Mathematics Education Graduate Scholarship

A scholarship of about $950 will be awarded for a beginning or current member of a cohort in UNI's Graduate Programs in Mathematics Education. The applicant must be employed as a mathematics teacher in the state of Iowa, have two years of school teaching experience and have good academic standing.
