Graduates of the Department of Mathematics are well prepared to enter the professional workplace or to continue their education in mathematics.

The mission of the mathematics department is to provide an environment where students can learn and become competent users of mathematics and mathematical applications. Our students have the opportunity to work in computer labs and research groups to prepare for a variety of careers in teaching and industry.

The Teaching Mathematics program prepares students to teach at a variety of education levels, including the middle grades, secondary schools, and community colleges.

Master of Arts in Mathematics (Secondary Teaching Emphasis)

We have had a Master of Arts program for secondary teachers as long as the department has offered graduate degrees. The Master of Arts in Mathematics (Secondary Teaching Emphasis) is designed to extend the content and pedagogical knowledge of secondary school mathematics teachers. The program incorporates a dynamic relationship between theory and practice, and focuses on the development of teachers as reflective practitioners and lead teachers. The program is offered at a distance using a cohort model in which groups of students move through the coursework together, with courses delivered online via eLearning. Some summer courses may require limited on-campus attendance, in addition to eLearning. The program is offered as a non-thesis option only, however requires a culminating research paper. Mathematics for the Middle Grades MA

The Mathematics for the Middle Grades MA program follows a professional development model that is set in the context of classroom practice. Program content, understandings and experiences are directly and explicitly linked to your teaching. As a member of a cohort of practicing middle grades mathematics teachers, you will find that the friendships, support, and camaraderie found in our program with other teachers going through similar experiences with you will be one of the most important aspects for helping you analyze your teaching and vital in the teacher change process.

Graduate Assistantships

The Department of Mathematics offers paid Graduate Assistant positions to qualified students. Graduate assistants will be responsible for grading homework, in-class assignments, quizzes and tests for professors. Other duties include: tutoring in the Mathematics Laboratory; proctoring examinations for professors; occasional staffing of the front desk and other duties as needed by the Department of Mathematics.
