Scholarships
Thanks to our generous donors and friends, we’re able to offer a wide array of scholarship opportunities for incoming and current students in our department. These scholarships and information about the application process are listed below.
To apply for the incoming freshman and undergraduate scholarships, complete the online scholarship application before the deadlines listed.

Scholarships for Incoming Freshman
- AEGON Transamerica Actuarial Science Scholarship
Freshmen and current undergraduate actuarial science majors are eligible. One $2,000 scholarship was awarded for the 24/25 academic year.*
- Conrad & Jeanette Baumler Mathematics Scholarship
Incoming freshmen majoring in math education are eligible. One $2,500 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.*
- Irvin & Dorothy Brune Math Education Endowed Scholarship
One $1,574 scholarship was awarded to a freshman math education major for 25/26.*
- Jerry Jurschak Actuarial Science Scholarship
Freshmen and current undergraduate actuarial science majors are eligible. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years total if requirements are met. One $2,500 award was made to a freshman for the 24/25 academic year.*
- Patricia J. Larson Mathematics Scholarship
Freshmen and current undergraduate mathematics majors are eligible. Two $10,000 scholarships were awarded for the 25/26 academic year.* The scholarship is renewable for one year if criteria are met.
- Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship
Four $5,000 scholarships were awarded to math education majors for 25/26.*
- Fred W. Lott Scholarship in Mathematics
Three $4,641 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be an incoming freshman majoring in mathematics.
- Math Day Scholarships
The top five students in the annual Math Day competition are guaranteed at least $1,500 each in scholarship funding for their first year at UNI.
- Nathan McCay Mathematics Scholarship
Once every four years three freshmen majoring in mathematics are awarded this scholarship. The scholarship is renewable for up to three more years if the criteria are met and the amount awarded increases each year.
- Augusta Schurrer Scholarship - Math Excellence
A total of $9,271 in scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be an incoming freshman majoring in mathematics.
- Science Symposium Scholarship in Mathematics
For the academic year 2025-2026, one $3,800 scholarship was awarded to an incoming freshman math major.
- Loretta M. Smith Math Scholarship
To be eligible the applicant must be a math-teaching major. Two $5,000 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.*
- Charles and Dorothy McLeod Tubbs Mathematics Education Scholarship
One $2,367 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be majoring in mathematics-teaching.
Scholarships for Current Undergraduate Students
- AEGON Transamerica Actuarial Science Scholarship
Awarded to freshmen and upperclassmen majoring in actuarial science. Several $2,500 awards were made for 25/26.*
- Robert E. Allender Mathematics Teaching Scholarship
One $1,700 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching. The student must be enrolled full-time with a GPA of at least 2.5.
- The American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section) Scholarship
One $1,100 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be following a course of study appropriate for a career in quality control.
- Conrad and Jeannette Baumler Mathematics Education Scholarship
One $2,300 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Carol Woolson Beck Endowed Scholarship
One $3,150 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching.
- Don & Betty Boxleiter Endowed Scholarship
The applicant must major in mathematics-teaching and be from the state of Iowa. One $3,700 scholarship was awarded 25/26.*
- Alice & George Brown Math Scholarship
One $2,200 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be enrolled full-time in any program of the department with a GPA of at least 2.5.
- John F. and Ruth Cross Scholarship
One $1,980 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a statistics and actuarial science major who will have completed or be participating in an internship at the time of receipt.
- Elementary Mathematics Education Endowed Scholarship
One $3,000 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be enrolled in elementary mathematics education and must have completed 12 hours in the elementary education math education minor and have completed 65 hours at UNI.
- E.W. Hamilton Scholarship
One $3,100 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be enrolled in any program of the mathematics department or be an elementary education major with a K-6 math minor. The student must have completed 45 semester hours of college and have completed a minimum of one semester in residence at UNI prior to making application.
- Rich and Dee James Secondary Mathematics Teaching Scholarship
Two $2,350 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching and have a GPA of at least 3.25.
- Robert R. Johnson Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics
One $2,000 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be at least a junior majoring in mathematics-teaching with a concentration in statistics.
- Jerry Jurschak Actuarial Science Scholarship
Four awards of $2,500 were made for 25/26.* This scholarship is awarded to freshmen and upperclassmen majoring in actuarial science. It can be renewed up to four years if criteria are met.
- Patricia Lange Memorial Scholarship
Two $3,000 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a mathematics major of at least junior standing. Preference is given to female students.
- Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship
Six scholarships were awarded for 25/26 ranging from $5,500 to $8,000.* The applicant must be majoring in secondary math education, with preference given to junior or senior students.
- George and Mary McCoige Math Education Scholarship
One $2,500 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be majoring in math-teaching, with at least sophomore standing, GPA of at least 3.0, with preference to females.
- Gladys Mittman Endowed Math Scholarship
One $1,400 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* Juniors majoring in mathematics with a GPA of at least 3.0 are eligible for this scholarship.
- Denny & Janet Reimer Endowed Mathematic Scholarship
One $1,500 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* This scholarship is awarded to an Iowa resident majoring in mathematics.
- Augusta Schurrer Mathematics Grant
Two $3,800 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching. The student must have completed at least 65 semester hours at UNI with a GPA of a least 3.0. At least 20 of these hours must be in mathematics.
- Loretta M. Smith Math Scholarship
Four $3,750 awards were made to math-teaching majors for 25/26.* The applicant must major in mathematics-teaching.
- Myrtle Wiese Smith Memorial Endowed Scholarship
One $1,375 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching.
- Diane Lee Sorenson Baum Endowed Scholarship
One $3,000 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a K-6 mathematics minor and must have completed at least 75 credit hours at UNI with a GPA of at least 3.0. The student must also have at least 17 hours of completed work on the elementary mathematics minor with a GPA of at least 3.0.
- Mary & Jason Theilen Actuarial Science Endowed Scholarship
One $1,300 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must major in Actuarial Science with a GPA of at least 3.5.
- Thiessen Elementary Mathematics Education Scholarship
One $3,000 scholarship was awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a minor in K-8 mathematics education.
- Marcia E. Traer Endowment Scholarship
Two $2,375 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics. The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics. The recipient must be employed part-time, and preference will be given to female applicants.
- Carl and Wanda Wehner Mathematics Teaching Scholarship
Two $4,200 scholarships were awarded for 25/26.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in mathematics-teaching with an overall GPA and mathematics GPA of at least 3.0. The applicant must show financial need.
Scholarships for Graduate Students
- Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics
We anticipate awarding several scholarships of up to $1,000 each to students who demonstrate financial need, have a graduate GPA of 3.25 or above, and are beginning or current members of a cohort in UNI’s Graduate Programs in Mathematics Education.
- FINE Foundation Middle Grade Mathematics Teacher's Graduate Student Scholarship
A scholarship of up to $1,000 will be awarded for a beginning or current member of a cohort in UNI's Graduate Program in Mathematics for the Middle Grades. the recipient must be employed as a mathematics teacher in the state of Iowa, have two years of teaching experience and have good academic standing.
- Michael Millar Scholarship
A scholarship award of up to $1000 to students who demonstrate merit and financial need with preference given to students enrolled in the Master of Arts Program in Mathematics. The recipient must be taking at least six credit hours of graduate-level mathematics in any twelve-month period.
- John C. Peterson Mathematics Education Graduate Scholarship
A scholarship of about $950 will be awarded for a beginning or current member of a cohort in UNI's Graduate Programs in Mathematics Education. The applicant must be employed as a mathematics teacher in the state of Iowa, have two years of school teaching experience and have good academic standing.
* We anticipate, but cannot guarantee, similar funding for academic year 26/27.
