The best part about my major is that I will be qualified to teach in multiple branches of science. My degree has given me the qualifications to attain my dream job, and the experience I need to teach and understand any student that walks into my classroom.

Hands-on Learning

There is no better way to learn how to teach than to be in a classroom! UNI offers extensive field experiences prior to student teaching, starting your sophomore year. Students in UNI’s educator preparation programs acquire more than 700 hours of hands-on classroom experience before graduation. This is done through more than 350 school district partnerships, nine Iowa student teaching centers, and one out-of-state and international student teaching center that coordinates all out of state and international student teaching placements.

Student Teaching

Student teaching is full time for a full semester and offers the novice teacher the opportunity to slowly assume teaching duties until he or she is totally responsible for class preparation and classroom teaching. Secondary science teaching majors have recently gone to Alaska, New Jersey, Texas, New Zealand, Tanzania, Thailand and Argentina. Some of the basic science minors have gone to Arizona, Egypt, Kenya and Costa Rica.
