Art History Major
Explore the history of art and its impact on shaping cultures, philosophies and literatures around the globe
If you’re interested in working at an art museum, cultural institution, or pursuing graduate school, you should consider an Art History major.
Art historians are adept critical thinkers, excellent writers, and keen observers. Many of our graduates work in art museums, galleries, and other creative fields. Locally, our graduates hold positions as Director of Education at the Hearst Center for the Arts, Cedar Falls, and Curator at the Waterloo Center for the Arts, Waterloo. Beyond that, our grads are working at museums and cultural institutions around the country, and even abroad.
Art history majors are particularly well-equipped to add the Museum Studies Certificate to their major by adding the courses in Museum Studies and Collections, Care and Management.

As an art history major, I was able to work at the UNI Museum with the African Art collection. This gave me hands-on experience with handling, scanning, and researching these pieces.
Bringing Art to the Community
In addition to formal classroom experiences, our students also have a variety of community-based art education opportunities. Our students participate in collaborative art projects within local schools, and throughout our community. They learn first-hand how to plan, develop, and implement arts and cultural programming, which prepares students to work as educators and coordinators in museums and art centers.
