Printmaking is synergistic – gathering students from all areas to discover what print media can do for their creative practice
The printmaking studio at UNI is a true makers-space, encouraging the exploration of traditional and high-tech printing strategies relevant to the artists, educators, and designers of the future.
Our print studio is well-equipped for screen printing, woodcut, etching and lithography, with a range of presses for each medium – including a press that can print a full sheet of plywood. These presses, along with our digital facilities, foster creative use across disciplines.
The breadth of printmaking offered at UNI provides unique opportunities for self-publication and distribution of content, important tools for the entrepreneurial spirit required of contemporary artists.

Printmaking – Career Opportunities
Printmaking students have career options that span across fine art and commercial worlds. Printmaking offers studio artists the ability to publish and sell their own work. Our students also find employment at fine art presses. These presses are the backbone of the art market, producing limited editions for sale at galleries across the globe. Training in print processes allows many graduates to secure print-related jobs in the commercial sector, often combining design skills with production of printed products.
Real-world experiences, such as producing editions with visiting artists, help our graduates by providing the opportunity to work with nationally recognized artists while they are students at UNI. Printmaking is community-driven, and our graduates frequently find homes at community presses in Iowa and abroad. Students who decide to continue their education in graduate school often find placements in top-ranked programs with generous support.
Back when I was a student, I would never have guessed how influential printmaking would be on my career as a graphic designer. Graphic design is typically viewed as a commercial art while printmaking leans toward being a fine art; however, the overlap between the two is undeniable. From letterpress to screenprinting, the two share a deep past and carry a relationship to this day.
Visiting Artist Series
Each year, the UNI Department of Art hosts a number of visiting artists who lead workshops, and contribute to our collaborative and creative environment. In 2019, the printmaking program hosted Justin Brice Guariglia –a conceptual artist and former photojournalist – who worked with students in a screen printing class.
