Studio Art: Performance Art
Performance art gives students a new way to think about making art and promotes thinking more creatively about everyday life
Performance Art focuses on time and action as key elements of the art making process.
Rather than producing objects, performance artists create live interactive events – the artist is the art. In this program, students form a supportive community that encourages experimentation and creative risks. Within that close network, specific techniques for critiquing work lead to a keen understanding of how viewers see, understand, and respond to art.

Performance art changed my life. It taught me self confidence... and that the process in art and life is just as incredible as the end result.
Vertigo Performance Art Series
Each year, the Department of Art partners with the Waterloo Center for the Arts to present the Vertigo Performance Art Series. Through this series, students get to network with national and international artists as they prepare and present their performances. It’s rare for undergraduate students to have opportunities to closely observe the creative process of professional artists and it’s a great way to learn.
Since performance work is ephemeral, students also learn various methods of documentation including digital video. In advanced classes, students learn to edit using Adobe Premiere and strategies for distributing work online and through social media.
