Studio Art: Sculpture

Creativity at its finest

The sculpture program at the University of Northern Iowa encourages students to develop as artists and prepares them for professional opportunities in a variety of artistic and creative fields.

The balance of technical and conceptual practices are at the core of our curriculum. Embracing the interdisciplinary nature of sculpture, faculty emphasize an object-based approach to creating sculpture and foster explorations into new media, installation and other forms of expression.

Our graduates have successful careers as artists, arts administrators, art educators, art fabricators, museum exhibit designers, special effects artists, and participate in many other creative endeavors.

Facilities at UNI

Sculpture Studio

The sculpture studio, located in Kamerick Art Building, features 7,500 square feet of fabrication space that fosters a dialogue between traditional and experimental making practices. Our well-equipped facilities allow students to create sculptures of all scales, from microscopic to monumental. The studio features a complete woodshop, moldmaking/plastics lab, and a metal shop, housing industrial grade metal working equipment. Digital technologies provide students access to modern capabilities, including a large CNC plasma-cutting system, large format laser cutter, 3D printers, and a digital design and modeling lab.

UNI Public Art Incubator

The UNI Public Art Incubator (PAI) is a unique program that serves as a conduit between communities and artists to create art for public spaces. The proximity to the PAI benefits sculpture students in that they can embark on more ambitious projects. Our students regularly exhibit their work in professional outdoor sculpture exhibitions across the region. Public art is a rapidly growing field and sculpture students have the opportunity to position themselves to be competitive as fabricators and artists in their own right upon graduation. We are uniquely situated to allow students to explore public art through a variety of opportunities, collaborations, and community partnerships.

UNI Gallery of Art

The UNI Gallery of Art, located in Kamerick Art Building, offers students an opportunity to gain experience in the field as an undergraduate. Our students find part-time work assisting with gallery operations, and can intern with the gallery. In addition, our students display their work in exhibitions at the gallery each semester.
