About the Department
All the opportunities of a big university, with the friendly atmosphere of a smaller college. The UNI Physics Department really is the best of both worlds. We pride ourselves on personalized attention, combined with research opportunities and independent laboratory projects, allows students at the undergraduate level to work with sophisticated equipment and to learn what research in physics is all about.
Students have opportunities to work with faculty in such research areas as: Magnetic Properties of Materials, Optical Spectroscopy, Computational Materials Science, Theoretical Biophysics, Low-Dimensional Structures and Surfaces, and Physics Education.
The UNI Physics Club is directed by students, provides a good social setting for students and sponsors field trips to major research facilities and professional meetings as well as other events of scientific and educational value. During the 2013-2014 academic year a Women in Physics Club was formed with the encouragement and support of the department.
