Scholarships
Sure, there’s plenty of math involved in physics, but one thing you won’t have to worry about here is calculating the cost of college. Thanks to our generous alumni, donors and friends, we’re able to offer significant scholarship and fellowship funding for current and incoming students.
Additionally, the University of Northern Iowa has a large number of scholarships available. Search for scholarships here and then apply using the UNI Scholarship Application by January 15, 2026.
Scholarships Requiring an Application:
UNI Scholarship Application due January 15th. Contact the Physics Department (Physics@uni.edu or 319-273-2420) if you have questions. Make sure you check “Physics” on your online scholarship application—otherwise your application might not arrive at the Physics Department.
University Wide Scholarships:
Presidential Scholarships
- The awards are $4,000 per year for 4 years ($16,000 total).
- Requirements: ACT composite of 29 or above (SAT-CR&M of 1280 or above) and top 10% high school class rank
- or RAI of 335 or above
- Applications and Announcements:
- February 7th - Applications must be submitted using the UNI Scholarship Application.
March 15th - Presidential Scholarships awards will be announced.
Panther Awards: Offered for up to four years
- Iowa students applying to UNI directly from high school are automatically considered for scholarships ranging from $1,000 - $4,000 annually.
- Awards are based on academic achievement (GPA and/or ACT scores).
- Scholarships are renewable with a 2.5 GPA and continuous full-time enrollment. This scholarship is eligible for renewal for up to four years or completion of your bachelors degree, whichever comes first.
Students admitted by May 1 are given priority consideration.
Inspire Award: Offered for up to four years
- Students applying to UNI directly from high school who show financial need as indicated on the FAFSA are automatically considered for the $1,000/year Inspire Award.
- Award requires a minimum 3.5 high school GPA and can be stacked with Panther Awards.
- Scholarships are renewable with a 2.5 GPA and continuous full-time enrollment. This scholarship is eligible for renewal for up to four years or completion of your bachelors degree, whichever comes first.
Students admitted by May 1 are given priority consideration.
Bright Scholars of Iowa
- Be an Iowa resident entering UNI directly from high school
- Iowa Resident Cost of Attendance per year
- Top 10% of high school graduating class; OR RAI of 299+; OR ACT of 28+, OR GPA of 3.7+
- Have financial need

Scholarships Available for Incoming Physics Freshmen:
Gayl and Kathy Hopkins Scholarship
A $10,000 scholarship available to incoming first-year students from high school. The Gayl and Kathy Hopkins Scholarship will be awarded to incoming first-year physics majors with outstanding academic records.
Jourdan Scholarship For Excellence in Physics
Provides approximately $4,000 per year for 2 years to incoming physics students. Up to 3 Jourdan Excellence scholarships can be awarded to very high performing students. 2 to incoming, and 1 to a current rising sophomore. (1 year for a current student).
Jourdan Scholar Physics Scholarship
Provides $5,000 per year for two years to incoming physics students.
Butterworth Physics Scholarship
Provides $2,000 per year for one year to incoming physics students.
Dostal Physics Scholarship
Provides $1,500 per year for one year or two years to incoming physics students.
McKay Scholarship
Provides approximately $1,300 per year for 2 years to incoming physics students.
Carl & Wanda Wehner Physics Scholarship
Provides $1,000 per year.
Science Symposium Scholarship
- Provides various amount per year.
Physics Scholarships for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Students:
Jourdan Mentor Scholarship
Provides $2,000 per year.
Students will be paired with a "scholar" to mentor. Mentors will provide the freshman scholar with help on homework and exam preparation.
Grossman-Perrine Scholarship
Provides $2,000 per year.
The Grossman-Perrine Scholarship honors Dr. J. O. Perrine, a former UNI physics professor, and Mr. Eugene Grossman, a physics student from Delmar, Iowa, who studied with Dr. Perrine. Declared undergraduate physics majors at all levels are eligible for this scholarship.
Robert E. Allender Physics Teaching Scholarship
Provides $1,000 per year.
Open to students with a Physics Teaching major. Minimum of 30 credit hours in a declared teaching major.
Dr. Gerald Intemann Research Fellowship
Provides various amount per year.
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship - students will get a stipend for their summer research conducted.
Jourdan Scholarship For Excellence in Physics

CHAS Scholarships for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Students:
College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences (CHAS)
Begeman Memorial Scholarship
- Provides $6,000 per year. This is for a Junior or Senior planning on Graduate School.
Lantz Scholarship
- Provides $1,050 For Seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA overall, minimum of 48 hours (at least 32 hours from UNI).
Students First Scholarship
- Provides $1,070 per year. This requires a minimum 3.0 GPA
McCollum Scholarship
- Provides $1,280 per year. Requires a minimum 3.25 GPA overall, minimum 90 credit hours (at least 45 from UNI).
Roy and Abbott Science Scholarship
- Provides $1,000 per year. This is a recognize scholarship of service, and future potential development. 3.0 GPA, minimum of 30 credit hours at least 15 from UNI.
Jessica Allen Terri Scholarship
- Provides $1,000 per year.
Caroline Czarnecki Endowed Chemistry and Physics Scholarship
- Provides $1,812 per year.
Dr. Stanley J. Walljasper Endowment
- Provides $1,500 per year.
HMK STEM Scholarship
- $1,400 per year with the following requirements:
- Freshman with HS GPA >=3.25 and/or ACT >=28
- OR UNI student transferring to Physics with UNI GPA >= 3.25
Hubbard Math, Chemistry and Physics Education Scholarship
- Provides $2,500 for a Sophomore, Junior or Senior, with a minimum GPA of 3.2.
Kubik Endowed Scholarship
- $1,200 per year for Physics, Biology, Sciences, and Chemistry majors, Freshmen or Sophomores.
Sloan STEM Scholarship
- Provides $1,035 per year. Must be at least a Sophomore.
Thompson Scholarship
- Provides various amount per year.
