Prospective Students

The future of industry starts here

Home to top-ranked programs, the UNI Department of Applied Engineering & Technical Management prepares students for some of the most rapidly-growing industries in today’s society – whether it’s construction, manufacturing, management or education.

With a focus on hands-on learning, our educational style is anything but textbook.

Intern with industry-leading partners, gain experience working on real-world projects for real-world clients, and build your network by joining one of our several student organizations.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have the skills, experiences and connections you need to lead.

Engineering vs. Engineering Technology

Two dynamic areas of study, both with excellent outcomes. Which one is right for me?

What’s the difference between engineering and engineering technology? We're glad you asked. While there are slight differences between the two, choosing a major in engineering vs. engineering technology is more about identifying what you like to do and how you like to do it.

Engineering

  • Requires a slightly more theoretical approach to math and science
  • Requires more calculus-based math
  • Creates new technologies

Engineering Technology

  • Requires a slightly more applied approach to math and science
  • Requires more algebra-based math
  • Implements new technologies

Connecting you with opportunities

Research

Through unique undergraduate research experiences, our students have the chance to take their learning beyond the classroom – solving real-world problems. Working side-by-side with professors, you’ll develop practical skills that set you apart from the crowd, and have the chance to publish your work for the world to see.

Internships and Employment

Through experiential learning, we work hard to connect our students with internships and student employment opportunities to advance their education. You can intern with one of our industry-leading partners, like John Deere, or get a part-time job working at one of our centers, such as the Metal Casting Center or the Foundry 4.0 Center.

Panther Educational Products

Panther Products is a non-profit enterprise center on campus, located within the Applied Engineering Building. Panther Products employs students to primarily work on the design and production of products to fulfill grants and other needs on campus as well as within the local community. While working for Panther Products, students gain the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom by designing, building and producing items.
