Engineering Majors at UNI
Automation Engineering Technology
Featuring a combination of electronics and mechanical disciplines, Automation Engineering Technology is a rapidly growing industry. Students in this program will study computer programming, motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, control systems, instrumentation and mechatronics.
Electrical Engineering Technology
This program’s curriculum is broad-based, and hands-on – preparing you for a wide variety of careers in the electrical and electronics engineering industry. You’ll study everything from conventional and renewable electrical energy, to machinery and power systems, to microcomputers, digital electronics, wireless communications, computer hardware, networking and more.
Manufacturing Engineering Technology
This program prepares students for exciting careers in research and development, engineering, materials testing, quality control and more. With three different emphasis areas in metal casting, design and advanced manufacturing, you can choose classes that fit your goals and interests.
Physics & Engineering 3+2 Program
UNI’s unique 3+2 physics and engineering program allows students to earn two degrees in only five years. Through the program, students will study physics at UNI for three years, before studying engineering at Iowa State University or the University of Iowa for two years. By the end of your five years, you’ll graduate with a degree in physics from UNI and a degree in engineering from a partnering institution.
Materials Science Engineering Technology
Our Materials Science Engineering Technology major is designed to equip students with practical skills for working with materials in various industries. Whether it’s designing better batteries for electric vehicles, creating stronger and lighter materials for the automotive industry, or enhancing the durability of a smartphone – materials science engineering technologists are the ones who take an idea and make it reality.
Materials Science and Engineering
Materials Science is an interdisciplinary field that integrates principles from physics, chemistry, and engineering to understand and manipulate the properties of materials. In this major, you'll delve into the structure, composition, and processing of materials, aiming to optimize their performance in various applications. Whether you’re working with metals, polymers, ceramics, or composites, you’ll learn to tailor materials for specific purposes, such as improving strength, conductivity, or durability.
Facilities for the Future
Our Applied Engineering Building is home to thousands of square feet of workshops, production labs and specialized classrooms, outfitted with the latest equipment and technology. In 2022, we broke ground on a massive, $43 million renovation. This project will update and expand the facility, serving the needs of today’s students and ensuring UNI's Department of Applied Engineering & Technical Management will prepare Iowa's industry leaders for tomorrow.
