Joining a student club or organization is a great way to get involved. You’ll meet people who share the same interests – building lifelong friendships – while gaining professional experience, and honing your leadership skills.
Our department is home to a number of student-led organizations, which you can explore below.

TESOL Club
The TESOL Club learns about topics relevant to teaching all students in an increasingly diverse society. The TESOL Club runs an annual conference, partners with the Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) and highlights the concerns of Emergent Bilinguals.
Inner Weather
Inner Weather is UNI’s student-run literary magazine, housed in the Department of Languages and Literatures. Published annually, the magazine highlights fiction, nonfiction, poetry and artwork submitted by students, faculty and staff. A team of contributing editors works diligently through the year, supervising every stage in the publication process from initial publicity and selection, to layout, editing, proofing, printing and distribution. Under the guidance of a faculty advisor, students interested in the world of editing can gain hands-on experience in publication.
English Club
The UNI English Club is a space for students of all majors to explore their interests in literature and creative writing. Past club activities include “Books by the Bonfire,” poetry slams, game nights and a semi-annual book sale/fundraiser.

Sigma Tau Delta
Sigma Tau Delta is an international non-profit organization. The initials of the Society's name also represent its official motto and ideals: sincerity, truth and design. The Society's purposes are literary, educational and charitable. Sigma Tau Delta represents high achievement in undergraduate, graduate and professional studies of English language and literature. One of the objectives of the organization is to provide cultural stimulation on college campuses and to promote interest in literature in a multitude of areas, including creative and critical writing.
Sigma Delta Pi
Activities that Sigma Delta Pi Theta Eta Chapter has done recently include the fall Spanish film series, annual fall T-shirt sales (T-Shirts that read "Universidad del Norte de Iowa"), a spring field trip and various other cultural and volunteer activities throughout the school year like hosting UNICOSS, the UNI Community of Spanish Speakers. UNICoTE
UNICoTE is open to all students interested in the teaching of English. UNICoTE regularly meets to discuss YA lit, bring in speakers, and hold education-related events. UNICoTE is a student affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and members regularly attend the Iowa Council of Teachers of English (ICTE) conference.
