Sandra, her husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, his suspicious death is presumed to be a murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. What follows is not just an investigation into Samuel’s death but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship.
This documentary by Kaouther Ben Hania uses an audacious formal conceit to tell the story of Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters to answer the question of how and why the Tunisian woman’s two eldest daughters were radicalized. Four Daughters is a compelling portrait of five women and a unique work of nonfiction cinema that pushes against the conventional boundaries of the documentary form to explore the nature of memory, rebellion, and the ties that bind mothers and daughters.
With the release of Breathless in 1960, Jean-Luc Godard established himself overnight as a cinematic rebel and symbol for the era’s progressive and anti-war youth. Sixty-two years and 140 films later, Godard is among the most renowned artists of all time, taught in every film school yet still shrouded in mystery. Godard Cinema offers an opportunity for film lovers to look back at his career and the subjects that obsessed him while paying tribute to the most revered French director of all time.
Set in the terrestrial majesty of the Sahel, Banel & Adama is a tragic romance of two young lovers facing the challenges of independence and tradition. The fated lovers have plans that do not include the expectations of others, until the rains do not come, the cattle begin to die, the men leave and Banel, once lovelorn and lost in responsibility, is called to a life they had not planned. Banel & Adama is a lyrical odyssey that takes a hypnotic descent into mythic fabulism with the profundity of a timeless fable.
Following a difficult journey across Europe, Aleksei reaches Paris to enlist in the French Foreign Legion—a highly selective military corp that allows any foreigner, even undocumented, to be granted a French passport. In the Niger Delta, Jomo fights against oil companies that threaten the survival of his village. His sister Udoka, meanwhile, dreams of escaping, knowing that all is already lost here. Beyond borders, life and death, their destinies will intertwine.
Eight-year-old Vicky has an unusual gift: she can recreate any scent she comes across, even that of her beloved mother, Joanne. When Vicky’s estranged aunt suddenly returns to their mountain town, the invocation of her fragrance plunges the young girl back in time to unravel the mystery of Joanne’s fiery past with her now sister-in-law. The Five Devils forges a witchy and wildly imaginative fable out of family secrets and queer romance.
