Creative Work

We believe the best way to learn is by doing. That’s why we work hard to connect our students with unique opportunities that help them explore their passions, and put their skills to use in a real-world setting – whether it’s creating a documentary series, building interactive web experiences, launching a PR campaign or more. Explore some of the creative work by our faculty and students below.

Illuminate Art and Light Festival

Created by faculty and staff in the Interactive Digital Studies program and the Department of Art, the Illuminate Art & Light Festival featured larger-than-life projections and temporary installations around campus and the College Hill area.

STUDENT-LED DOCUMENTARY SERIES

UNI at Wind Caves

Students in the Digital Media program traveled to Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota to document cave research being done by the departments of chemistry and biochemistry, biology and earth and environmental sciences. Their work resulted in a number of short videos, and a longer documentary style video about the trip and the research.

Science in the Media

Science in the Media is an organization created to provide tools for journalists to tell better stories about environmental science in Iowa. Science in the Media was created by digital media faculty and students.

The group’s website contains information to help reporters without a science background. But the department has gone a step beyond providing tools by working with tomorrow’s journalists. Science in the Media and IowaWatch, a journalism nonprofit, work with Cedar Falls High School journalism students to produce original investigative reporting each year. The ongoing collaboration was featured in the Columbia Journalism Review in April.
