Student Organizations
Joining a student club or organization is a great way to get involved. You’ll meet people who share the same interests – building lifelong friendships – while gaining professional experience, and honing your leadership skills.
Our department is home to a number of unique clubs and organizations, ranging from publications, to performance, to speech, debate and more. Learn about our organizations below.
- Hilltop Media
Hilltop Media is the University of Northern Iowa’s student-run Digital Media Production Organization on campus. Students gain hands-on experience through producing a range of projects, which include creative works, documentaries, client work, and competition entries. These projects are used by students to build their portfolios.
Students travel to local production companies to see how they operate and attend competitions around Iowa. Professionals attend meetings once a semester to talk about their work.
Past experience handling production equipment is not required as we will teach you how to use it. If holding a camera is not your thing there’s plenty of other ways to get involved, such as working with lighting, audio, or editing. Actors and script writers are also welcome.
For more information, contact Professor Francesca Soans, Hilltop Media faculty advisor.
- Communication Graduate Student Organization (CGSA)
The Communication Graduate Student Association offers support and activities that help the student body to create a sense of community within the department and its faculty.
The group’s mission is to help educate current and future University of Northern Iowa graduate students for life after graduation and to provide opportunities to enhance skills that will benefit them in their future careers, while maintaining a fun and social atmosphere.
The Communication Graduate Student Association offers its members meetings with guest speakers, various socials, and participation in different conferences.
Membership is open to all students.
For more information, contact Dr. Tom Hall, graduate program director.
- Interpreters Theatre
This student organization gives UNI students the chance to devise, write, direct, and perform their own shows. The Interpreters Theatre is a performance lab where students and faculty can collaborate to create performances that relate to storytelling, identity, social issues and pop culture. Every show in the Interpreters Theatre offers a unique perspective on life and engagement in the world.
- KULT, 94.5 FM
Your music. Your station. Welcome to 94.5 KULT, the home of UNI's student-run radio station. That's right, a station entirely for UNI students, by UNI students.
- Northern Iowan
UNI's independent student-produced newspaper, covering UNI and College Hill since 1892. Published twice weekly in print form, and always online.
- Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)
PRSSA is the world's pre-eminent, pre-professional public relations organization. Its purpose is to cultivate a relationship between students and public relations professionals while encouraging students to adhere to the highest ideals and principles of the practice of public relations.
- UNI Speech and Debate
UNI Speech and Debate, also known as UNI Forensics, one of the oldest student organizations on campus, offers students the opportunity to compete extensively in speech and debate. Participation in debate consists of two teams discussing the pros and cons of a selected topic. Individual events provide students with a variety of speaking experiences, including interpretation, public address, impromptu and extemporaneous speaking.
