Join our dynamic combined program where students gain a robust background in teaching methodology for English and French as second languages. Our students come from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds, enriching the learning experience.
Our courses focus on second language teaching methodologies to equip students with in-demand skills to teach English and French to non-native speakers. The TESOL component covers Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, providing a deep understanding of language acquisition and teaching strategies. Lastly, the French component includes coursework in Francophone culture and civilization, translation, and language teaching methods, offering a well-rounded education in French studies.

Courses & Curriculum
Our program is a full-time, on-campus program and offers a non-thesis option only. Our core classes can include:
- Second Language Acquisition
- Practicums and Seminars
- Language Teaching Methods
- English Grammar.
The TESOL component of this M.A. program requires successful completion of a teaching portfolio or presentation at a UNI-sponsored
or other professional conference/symposia as specified by the TESOL/Applied Linguistics faculty.
The French component of this M.A. program requires successful completion of a culminating research project in French, as specified
by the advisor, as well as the following coursework in French:
- Culture and civilization
- Translation
- Linguistics.

Our application process is smooth and easy. You can apply now and pay your fee later or even get it waived, if you qualify. Current or former UNI students will also have their app fee waived.
Requirements for Admission
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended
- Statement of Purpose
- Two letters of recommendation (in French or English)
- Writing sample in French
- 2.75 is the minimum GPA to be accepted without provision; applicants with a GPA lower than 2.75 may still be admitted provisionally
- Application fee (this can be waived or deferred, see if you qualify).
Although the program has rolling admissions and admits students for both Fall and Spring semesters, applications must be on file by February 1st for full admission and funding consideration.
Requirements for International Applicants
Along with the basic application requirements, international applicants also need:
- Proof of English proficiency
- A copy of the personal data page of your passport
- A completed UNI Financial Statement and Certification form
- Non-refundable application fee.
Students may be required to take additional English language improvement courses at the discretion of the TESOL/Applied Linguistics faculty.

Our students may be assigned teaching or research-related positions; these include a range of opportunities relevant to the student’s area of study, such as working for individual professors on projects or working for UNI’s Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP).
