Creative Writing Minor

Work with published authors to develop your craft and gain exposure to the world of literary publishing.

Creative Writing students at UNI have the option of pursuing instruction in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Many of our students take the opportunity to volunteer or work an internship at the North American Review, America’s longest-lived literary magazine (founded in 1815 and housed at UNI since 1969). Outside of the classroom, Cedar Falls boasts a vibrant arts and literary community. Here, students attend readings by regional and nationally-known figures, share their work at regular open mics, and volunteer with Inner Weather, UNI’s student literary magazine. Creative writing pairs well with many majors, including English and English-Teaching. Many creative writers also obtain the Certificate in Literary Publishing.
