Biology: EEOB
A world of opportunity through engaged learning experiences
Whether you’re out studying plant life on the prairie, or fish in the local waterways, we can promise your experience as an EEOB major will be anything but textbook.
Our ecology, evolution, and organismal biology majors take a variety of classes on everything from field zoology to conservation, and have opportunities to conduct unique field research around the country. Inside and outside the classroom, you’ll have unique, hands-on learning opportunities that highlight real-world skills.
With small class sizes and personalized attention from our expert faculty, you’ll have the chance to forge the personal connections that make UNI so great.

Undergraduate Research
Nearly half of all UNI Biology students choose to participate in undergraduate research. Working side by side with professors, our students are conducting innovative research that spans everything from studying endangered species, to tracking disease progression – furthering the field of science. About half of biology faculty journal publications include student coauthors – giving our students an opportunity to publish their work all before graduation.
I found my passion for environmental work at UNI, and had amazing experiences along the way. One I'm most proud of, and learned the most from, was working in a genetics research lab, sequencing a new genus.
Biology: Honors Emphasis
One of the options you have as a Biology major is to add an emphasis in honors research to the B.S. or B.A. degree. To do this, you must complete a minimum of 4 credits of research (BIOL 3190) over the course of two or more semesters. Any further research credits count as University elective credits. In addition, the student must register for one credit of senior thesis (BIOL 3191) and write a formal senior thesis according to departmental guidelines in fulfillment of that credit.
Opportunities for students
Study Abroad
Studying abroad is a transformational learning experience. Department of Biology faculty members typically lead one or two of these experiences each summer. Our most recent trips were to the Galapagos Islands and to New Zealand. Our department is also generous in allocating credits as biology major electives with pre-approved courses at designated international and national universities.
Internships
We believe some of the most important learning happens outside of the classroom. That’s why our department supports opportunities for local, regional and national internships with local Conservation Offices, Midwest Zoos and National Parks Programs.
Clubs
The UNI Department of Biology is home to a number of clubs and student organizations, which offer students a chance to meet people who share the same interests – building lifelong friendships – while gaining professional experience, and honing their leadership skills. Our clubs include everything from the Pre-Medical Club to the Student Nature Society.
