Whether you want to be a doctor, dentist, veterinarian or other healthcare professional, the Biomedical major at UNI will prepare you for a successful career in the fields of health and medicine – and for the professional schools that lead to them. In fact, our graduates routinely have among the highest med school placement rates in the Midwest.
Our Biomedical major was designed with pre-professional students in mind, providing an efficient and cost-effective pathway to success whether you are interested in medical school, chiropractic, pharmacy, physical therapy, dental, veterinary, optometric, podiatric or other health-related programs.
The degree covers many or all of the prerequisite courses that professional schools require, and you’ll have an advisor by your side the whole time to help you through the process – making sure you have everything you need to be successful.

Biology: Honors Emphasis
One of the options you have as a Biology major is to add an emphasis in honors research to the B.S. or B.A. degree. To do this, you must complete a minimum of 4 credits of research (BIOL 3190) over the course of two or more semesters. Any further research credits count as University elective credits. In addition, the student must register for one credit of senior thesis (BIOL 3191) and write a formal senior thesis according to departmental guidelines in fulfillment of that credit.
After graduation, I plan on applying for medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. In the meantime, I’ll continue working as a research fellow in pediatric oncology at Stead Family Children’s Hospital. None of these life accomplishments would’ve been possible without the Department of Biology supporting my dream.
Undergraduate Research
Nearly half of all UNI Biology students choose to participate in undergraduate research. Working side by side with professors, our students are conducting innovative research that spans everything from studying endangered species, to tracking disease progression – furthering the field of science. About half of biology faculty journal publications include student coauthors – giving our students an opportunity to publish their work all before graduation.
